- Guilt says, “I made a mistake.”
- Shame says, “I am a mistake.”
Shame doesn’t correct behavior—it conditions obedience. It doesn’t inspire change—it breeds self-hatred. And when people believe they deserve shame, the system doesn’t even have to enforce it anymore. They enforce it on themselves. That’s the real trick of it.
